Is the remodeler a member of the Olympia, Master Builders?

This is a professional trade association whose purpose is to improve the construction industry and the business climate in which it operates. Members are dedicated to integrity, craftsmanship and respect for consumers, the environment and one another.

Does the remodeler belong to the Olympia Master Builders Remodelors' Council?

This organization helps to educate their members on new products, construction techniques, business practices, and industry issues.

Does the remodeler participate in continuing education and certification programs in the remodeling industry?

The Remodelors' Council provides certification programs such as Certified Graduate Remodelor™ (CGR), Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS), and others.

Does the remodeler have a current General Contractor's License, Insurance, and Bond?

Contract Labor & Industries hotline at 1-800-647-0982 or go to their web site at www.lni.wa.gov.

Does the remodeler carry insurance that protects you from claims arising from property damage or jobsite injuries?

Ask for a copy of the remodelers insurance certificates so you can be sure you will not be liable in those situations for property damage or jobsite-related injuries.

How long has the remodeler been in business?

Longevity suggests financial stability.

Does the remodeler maintain a solid relationship with experienced independent trade contractors (such as plumbers and electricians)?

This may be important to keep your job running smoothly.

Does the remodeler participate in community programs such as the Rebuilding Together Program to assist low income and elderly families?

The Olympia Master Builders Remodelors' Council and Rebuilding Together joined in a partnership to form the Olympia chapter of Rebuilding Together. The 2004 project included five low income and elderly family home remodels over a two week period involving 70 volunteers.

Does the remodeler possess a trustworthy reputation among customers, peers, and people involved in the industry?

Ask the remodeler to share names and phone numbers of some customers with you and take the time to see the remodelers work with emphasis on jobs similar to yours.

Does the remodeler have a working knowledge of the many types and ages of homes in the area?

Knowing what is likely to be behind a wall or under a floor helps the remodeler to provide reliable estimates. An extremely low bid may indicate lack of experience and an inability to later cover the actual costs involved in the job.

Does the remodeler offer an array of options?

This demonstrates knowledge of and experience with a variety of products, materials, and techniques.

Does the remodeler arrange for the building permits?

Does the remodeler offer a warranty?

If so, what kind and for how long? What is covered under the warranty and what is not?

Does the remodeler agree to begin and complete your job within your timetable?
